In Tuesday’s Metro is an interview with Jim James from My Morning Jacket, featured in their “On My iPod” column. Here’s his six-track mix:

Come Get To This by Marvin Gaye

This is a strange song. Marvin sings about fineries while the saddest strings play in the background and some dude wails on sax.

Summer Never Ends by John Callahan

This song is a sweet little psychadelic dream puff. I feel like I’m on a little cloud listening to an old piano and Callahan’s soothing voice is wafting through an endless summer.

My Kind of People by Cee-Lo

I always bring this out in Summertime. It has a classic big barbeque-party feel to it and Cee-Lo really shines. It makes me want to hang out with all my favourite people down by a river.

Mean Old World by Sam Cooke With The Soul Stirrers

A great old-timey classic that’s right up there with Stand By me. ‘This is a mean old world to live in by yourself,’ Sam sings.

Soldier by Erykah Badu

This is one of the most hypnotic songs I’ve ever heard. A sweet flute loop carries you over an intense beat. Is she talking about Obama? Is she talking about the war? Is she talking about equality? Maybe it’s all rolled up into one? I like how mysterious the song is.

Tanguedia III by Astor Piazzolla

This is from the album Tango: Zero Hour, which is like one long song. It’s like being trapped inside a clock and runing along the moving gears towards a beautiful maiden in distress, trying not to get crushed as an angry mob chases you.

My Morning Jacket release Evil Urges – 10.06.2008

Anyone who is a MMJ fan will already have been wetting their pants (this is including myself, I had 5 underwear changes on Tuesday morning alone) in excitement and anticipation for the release of their new album Evil Urges.

If you haven’t already, go buy it, it hit the shelves two days ago. I can guarantee that you’ll love it. However, if for some reason totally unfathomable, you can’t go and buy it, you can still go onto the bands Myspace and listen to the entire album.

The band have taken such a creative leap with this album, to great success. Although it still has that guitar-driven rock element that we all know and love from the last three albums. “Highly Suspicious” is probably the albums WTF moment. And you can hear Prince’s influence in the funky rock guitar outbursts and ear piercing falsetto. “Sec Walkin” sounds a bit 70’s soul-ish. Best track of the album (so far) for me though, “Touch Me I’m Going To Scream, Part 2”, which I imagine is going to be a huge track, and in which Jim James shows off his amazing Omnichord skills.

Alas, there’s so much more to the album than these three songs, and I’m not posting this as some kind of album review anyway, so stop reading my opinions and go form your own! Quickly now!

“Oh! This feeling is wonderful! Don’t you ever turn it off!”. Ooft.
